Hunter’s Moon From Glacier Point in Yosemite

This October brought a Halloween weekend full moon. We saw the moon rise on Friday night in Yosemite Valley and thought we should definitely check it out at Glacier Point. All the angles seemed to line up to a near Half Dome moon rise. This was our first time being at Glacier Point for sunset and it was amazing. The shadows of the granite cliffs overtook the valley and then pinks, purples and oranges lingered in the sky. Just as the sky was getting dark, the full moon peered over the high Sierras. A crowd was there from the sunset, we witnessed a proposal and many people coming and going. The temperatures were dropping and my fingers were on the verge of frostbite. As the moon fully showed itself in the sky, the crowd erupted with a standing ovation. What we witnessed seemed rare and delightful. On our way to Glacier Point we hiked out to Taft Point and enjoyed some world class views as well. Here are some shots from our incredible experience.

Always an incredible view from Glacier Point. The Hunter’s Moon rises behind Half Dome.
Shades of warm colors illuminate around Half Dome.
Every moment after the sun sets the colors of alpenglow change.
There was still enough light from the day to light up the mountains as the moon rose
